A Guide to Ubud

After a few days by the coast, we took an Uber (yes really, it’s even reached Bali!) inland to Ubud, needless to say I had seen many beautiful pictures enticing me to this spiritual centre of the island, including the prospect of seeing lots of monkeys!

So after our first rice terrace view lunch (in a restaurant just next to the monkey sanctuary car park) we headed to the sanctuary, only the equivalent of £2 I think for entry is so reasonable, it is a fairly large area with loads of walkways in the rainforest and paths through the temples. Monkeys were definitely everywhere and certainly very cheeky, I would advise to not take any food or drink or even a large bag, they'll be after you!

Something I've always wanted to do is white-water rafting and Bali was the perfect spot for beginners, very gentle streams and the guides are so skilled & knowledgeable. We did have to walk a mile to get to the river though, down steep muddy paths (with flip-flops on) Knowing this now, if i ever did again I would definitely try to wear proper footwear haha! Anyway the experience was amazing, mostly quite gentle drops but enough rapids to keep it fun (but not fall out the boat!) and a waterfall half way down to stop and take pictures, unfortunately we left the GoPro behind :(

On our final full day in Ubud we got a driver for the day, we wanted to see the Tegalalang rice terraces and explore the area more. I think we only paid about £18 for 7 hours, he waited for us everywhere we stopped and even guided us round one of the temples as well as recommending a lovely lunch spot. We also stopped off at Jungle Fish, 'the beach club in the jungle'. What an insane pool and amazing place, unfortunately about 20 mins after we got there it chucked it down - our first experience of serious jungle rain!

In terms of nightlife for Ubud, I would say it is fairly limited, lots of very good value choices for dinner, but we mostly ended up at the Laughing Buddha bar in a huge barn, right in the centre of town, live music every night (highly recommend the Monday night band!). If you're looking for something more late night, the only club, open into the early hours is CP Lounge - cool outside area in lush gardens and a chilled vibe but also has an indoor dance floor too!
